Spektrum der Wissenschaft Verlagsgesellschaft mbH ("Spektrum") privacy statement

 A. Information concerning data protection

Spektrum attaches great importance to the protection of personal data (i.e. all statements of information on the personal or material circumstances) of users of the www.contoo.de platform. Users of the platform include both users who are interested in participating in scientific events and employees of organisers who use the platform to organise an event ("users"). Some of the data disclosed by users over the platform will be personal data. Our platform, www.contoo.de, allows organisers of scientific events to make contact with potential event participants and create their own organiser web pages; users are able to register for events with organisers. Spektrum provides the technical infrastructure for this and, in doing so, gathers, processes and uses personal data belonging to users.

The purpose of this privacy statement it to provide users with more detailed information. This privacy statement is to be regarded as part of Spektrum's general terms and conditions for use of the www.contoo.de platform, as bindingly agreed between the user and Spektrum. It applies to all services offered by Spektrum over the platform ("services"). The organisers themselves are responsible for any data which they gather or process via the organiser web pages; this privacy statement does not apply to any such data. Please contact us at privacy@contoo.com, should you have any questions or comments regarding this privacy statement. You can also contact us by post using the following address: Spektrum der Wissenschaft Verlagsgesellschaft mbH, Slevogtstrasse 3-5, 69126 Heidelberg, Germany. Spektrum asks users to note the following when using the services:

1. Spektrum undertakes to observe the statutory provisions with regard to data protection, particularly the German Data Protection Act (BDSG) and the provisions of the German Telemedia Act (TMG) which concern data protection.

2. Spektrum will only gather, process and use personal data within the scope of providing the services. Spektrum will not lend, sell or otherwise make the personal data available to third parties without the user's permission, unless Spektrum is obliged to pass on the data for legal reasons (e.g. by law or judgment or for the purpose of prosecuting illegal and fraudulent actions on the part of the user) or is legally entitled to do so (e.g. to fulfil a contract).

3. With the exception of the registration data described in greater detail below, the user is able to decide for himself which personal data he discloses over the platform. Data entered by the user in his personal profile or when using services on the platform will be gathered, processed and used by Spektrum for this purpose. In particular, this concerns the following data:

3.1 Required registration data To register with Spektrum, the user enters personal data such as his first name, surname, e-mail address and sex, as well as a password and user name. Required registration data is identified as such. Spektrum requires this registration data to set up, manage and process a user account.

3.2 Voluntary content, information, etc./third-party access If the user is offered the possibility of entering other personal data besides the required registration data (e.g. private or professional interests, information regarding education, institutions, companies, etc.) on the platform, the user should note that disclosing this information is voluntary and that it can be used, for instance, for the purpose of getting to know and exchanging information with other users and that this information can be viewed by other users and the general public. It may be possible to find this information using Internet search engines.

4. If the platform contains links to third-party websites, Spektrum has no influence over the collection, processing and use of data by these third parties. Consequently, Spektrum does not accept responsibility for this. This applies in particular to the data collected by organisers after users have registered for an event.

5. Spektrum feels obliged to protect user data and has taken suitable measures in this regard. Spektrum does not, however, accept responsibility or liability for the disclosure of user data due to errors during data transmission and/or unauthorised access by third parties.

6. The user can demand information regarding his saved personal data free of charge at any time, using the contact addresses given above.

7. Spektrum reserves the right to make amendments to this privacy statement, provided that these amendments are reasonable for the user. Spektrum will inform users of amendments using the e-mail address entered by the user during registration and will make the amended version available on the platform.

B. User's consent to special data processing procedures

By accepting this privacy statement during registration, the user consents to his data being processed as described below. This consent can be revoked at any time with future effect in writing (to Spektrum der Wissenschaft Verlagsgesellschaft mbH, Slevogtstrasse 3-5, 69126 Heidelberg, Germany) or by e-mail privacy@contoo.com. The user has taken note of the information concerning data protection (Part A. above) and also declares the following:

1. Access by particular organisers

I consent to organisers with whom I have registered as a participant or user of the corresponding organiser web pages viewing my personal information saved by Spektrum for the purposes of the event.

2. Transfer to cooperation partners

I consent to my data being transferred to Spektrum's cooperation partners (e.g. etracker GmbH) and processed by these partners for the purpose of improving and arranging the services to meet demands. For this purpose, use profiles will be created using pseudonyms. Any data gathered and saved in the process data will not be used to identify the user personally. However, because of the saved customer profile, the theoretical possibility of the data being merged with the bearer of the pseudonym cannot be excluded.

3. Information for the user

I consent to Spektrum using my personal data for the purpose of presenting me with information on events or other content related to the platform which is tailored to my personal profile or my personal interests.

4. Cookies and log files

I consent to Spektrum using cookies and log files as described below:
Usage data will be gathered, processed and used with the aid of cookies, allowing the user to control the various services on the platform and manage his personal account. Cookies are text files which are either saved temporarily in the computer's main memory or on its hard drive. Their main purpose is to offer the user the same personal settings for every new session. Some cookies are saved permanently on the user's hard drive. However, the user is able to prevent this by adjusting his browser settings.
Each time the site is accessed, the user's access data will be recorded in the log file. Data such as IP address, remote host, time, status, the volume of data transferred and the websites visited immediately before the requested site, as well as product and version information for the browser used, will be saved. This data is gathered anonymously for statistical purposes, to enable the creation of user profiles and for optimisation and marketing purposes.
